I thought it would be interesting to start a topic about where everyone is from. If you don't feel comfortable disclosing this information, then you definitely don't have to I would actually prefer if you kept it pretty general.. don't give us your city, address, or zip code haha - just a general idea is fine Personallyy, I'm from the US, the southern bit. I don't know what the weather is like where you all live, but it is HOT here. While we're at it, why not say any other languages you are learning or can speak fluently? English is my native language, and the only language I can speak fluently. I know a good amount of Spanish, but can't speak it too well >.< I also know bits and pieces of French, but very little - which is why I apologize for any errors on the site!

I'm from Canada, the West of Canada (though soon to be the East for school purposes and I can't wait!) The only language I speak fluently is English. I know a decent amount of Spanish, and little bits and pieces of French. On another note (still related to languages though) in September I'm continuing to study Spanish, but I'm also starting Latin. Again, extremely excited.

I'm from Romania, Europe. I'm not really proud of this, but neither disappointed. Anyway, I like it here but I love to travel and see new places. Right now the temperature here is around 30°C. Ohhh and it's very weird for me because here it's night and for some of you it's day. I spent this spring in Amsterdam with my uncle and it was great living for 2 and half months like the Dutch people do. My natal language is Romanian. I can speak English (but I still have some problems ) and I take classes of French (3 years already) but I couldn't learn a thing my professor is... uhm, confusing, haha. Also, I can read in Cyrillic alphabet and I understand some words in Russian but I don't know how to respond or formulate a sentence (except "I'm hungry, Mom" ) Hmmm, come to think of it, I've never got out of the continent... _________________ you give me miles and miles of mountains and I'll ask for the sea

I'm from the Netherlands (the small country between Germany and the Northsea, whith the windmills, the coffeshops (where you can't buy coffee xD), the wooden shoes, and the Rotterdam harbor.) Haha Amsterdam's great, though I live in the south-east part and.. it's so boring there. I can speak Dutch, English (not as good as Dutch but pretty well actually), and at school I also have French (which I thinlk is so, so very, very hard), German (I don't like the language, but I can understand it, though I can't speak it), Latin & Old Greece (but the last two we only have to translate things, so I can't speak it) In my free time I'm also trying to learn Bahasa Indonesia. Now, it's summer so it's like 25°C here and it's sunny, but in other seasons it can be pretty rainy too.

I'm from the US too the Northeast coast: New York. I think I'm the one closest to Lexa. I'm fluent in English and Spanish actually the first language I learned was Spanish. I took four years of French and I completely forgot how to speak it but I can read it and understand it decently. I will be taking a bilingual class for Spanish in college. I need to perfect my spanish speaking skills and I'm horrified of taking that class. I would like to learn German and Portuguese I actually can read in Portuguese it's quite smiliar to Spanish. I lived in Ecuador for about a year when I was around four years old so I have left the continent but I would like to explore the Eastern Hemisphere one day. Layla, why are you not proud being from Romania? Sorry if I'm prying.

Wow, it's really cool to look at this and see how far apart we are, but that we all still found this site through one way or another Alyssa, it's awesome that you can understand so many different languages! I've heard that once you know two or more languages it gets "easier" to pick up a language - especially with something like Portuguese, as Joon said, which is similar to Spanish. I wouldn't know, but that's what I've heard And Joon being bilingual in both English and Spanish will help you so much down the road when you go to get a job - saying that you can understand both will just be one more thing that'll put you above the others (which is why I attempted to learn Spanish, but that didn't really work out too well ) But good luck with that college class ^.^

Thank you for those wise words, Violette. Yes everybody tells me that it's a great advantage to be bilingual. Personally to me learning languages is fun but I know that there are people that are just not good at it. Just like I'm horrible at learning complicated math.

Haha we can trade then! I'm actually pretty good at the memorization aspect and understanding conjugations and stuff like that - so I can read everything pretty well - what throws me off is speaking. My accent is absolutely horrible, although I took the class for four years. I'm not really sure that's something I can fix

Hahaha. I think that's great that you know the grammar and so what if you don't have the accent. As long as you can understand and carry on a conversation that's good enough. It's like people who learn to speak English and they have an accent. They wish they could speak just like us but I give them credit for being able to learn a new language.

Oh, well since there aren't many people who can speak Dutch so at School we have to learn English, German, French (and at some schools Spanish) too. And I'm doing ''Gymnasium'' were you also have classic languages. (Latin and old Greece) But later you can drop some subjects so next year I'll only have Dutch & English (which is required) and than I'll have Latin too. So anyway, here it's not that special you can speak/understand more than two languages.

So it's required that you study English, German, and French in school? And I thought a two year language requirement was bad But good for you to know so many different languages ^.^ Is Latin and old Greece more difficult? And it's interesting that it's called Gymnasium - for me gymnasium would mean a class where you run around for a fitness requirement And that's true, Joon, I guess everyone would have to bare with me while I spoke slowly and inaccurately I'm actually hoping to spend sometime with a set of my grandparents who speak Spanish - from what I can tell the best way to learn a foreign language is to speak it often... at least I think that'd be true for me

Yes, you're right, Violette. Practice makes perfect. Wow, Alyssa, I wish I could live somewhere like that where school require students to learn multiple languages.

Latin and Greece are pretty difficult, but like with all languages once you get the hang of it, it gets easier. Though it has different grammar rules than with other languages. And it's not that I can have difficult conversations in Frensh and German it takes a long time before I can make up a sentence. And Juniper, you can always try learning other languages in your spare time. I know that sounds stupid but you can do it when you're really bored.

I'm from the US. I've never been outside the country, but I really want to go to France, England, or Italy someday. I love foreign languages, and I'm actually pretty good at them. I speak English (fluently), French (pretty well), Spanish (a little), and Latin (Just enough to know what the spells mean). I love the French language. It's probably my favorite.
